13 See p. 60 above (on Col. 1:15).
10Gk. σύνεσις (“understanding”), as in Col. 1:9, implies the capacity to distinguish true from false. There as here σύνεσις is used in proximity to ἐπίγνωσις (see p. 46, n. 30).
11Eph. 3:17-18 is not documentarily dependent on Col. 2:2 (or 2:19); it is a fuller and independent expression of the same thought. For “in love” (ἐν ἀγάπη) cf. Eph. 4:15.
12The phrase “treasures of wisdom” (θησαυϱοί τῆς σοφας) appears in Sir. 1:25; here Paul adds “and knowledge” (ϰαί γνώσεως), “with a side-glance at the shibboleths of Gnosticism” (W. D. Davies, Paul and Rabbinic Judaism [London, 1948], p. 173). Despite the collocation of θησαυϱός and ἀπόϰϱυφος, it is doubtful whether there is a conscious reminiscence here of Isa. 45:3 LXX, θησαυϱοὺς σϰοτεινούς, ἀπoϰϱύφους ἀoϱάτους ἀνοίξω σοɩ (cf. F. Hauck, TDNT 3, p. 138, s.v.θησαυϱός).
