Chapter 276 of 343

15 Cf. 1 Cor. 12:27.

15 Cf. 1 Cor. 12:27.

14Cf. Ignatius, Smyrnaeans 8:2 (”wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the catholic church”). Elsewhere Ignatius insists on “the unity of the church” (Philadelphians 3:2), which is identical with “the unity of Jesus Christ” (Philadelphians 5:2). “In Eph. and Hb. unity and uniqueness, unity and absoluteness, and unity and perfection are all interwoven into close patterns of thought. Hence the theology of ἑνóτης (Eph. 4:4-5) is closely linked with that of ἐφάπαξ (Hb. 9:12) in the NT” (O. Michel, TDNT 3, p. 624, n. 2, s.v. ϰαταντάω).

15Cf. 1 Cor. 12:27.

16It is doubtful whether πίστις is ever used in the NT (apart from Jude 3, 20) in the sense of a creed or body of belief, although a few occurrences of the word in the Pastorals may have this force.
