64On “redemption” (ἀπολύτϱωσɩς) cf. F. Büchsel, TDNT 4, pp. 351-56 (s.v. λύω, λύτϱον, etc.); J. Schneider and C. Brown, NIDNTT 3, pp. 177-223 (s.v.”Redemption”); B. B. 67Gk. τὴν ἄφεσɩν τѽν ἁμαϱτɩѽν (in Eph. 1:7, τὴν ἄφεσɩν τѽν παϱαπτωμάτων). Cf. Matt. 26:28; Mark 1:4; Luke 1:77; 3:3; 24:27; Acts 2:38; 5:31; 10:43; 13:38; 26:18. The corresponding verb ἀφίημɩ is used by Paul in this sense only in the quotation from Ps. 32:1 (LXX 31:1) in Rom. 4:7. With ἂφεσɩς may be compared his use of πάϱεσɩς in Rom. 3:25, of the “passing over” of sins committed in the past. Cf. the use of ϰαϱίζομαɩ in Col. 2:13; 3:13.
