Section 60

86Gk. ἀπαύγασμα, used of Wisdom in Wisdom 7:26, where she is described as “an effulgence from everlasting light, an unspotted mirror of the working of God, and an image (εἰϰών) of his goodness.”

87Gk. ἀνὴϱ . . . εἰϰών ϰαὶ δóξα θεοῦ ὑπάϱϰων, where, because of the context, Paul uses ἀνήϱ (man as distinct from woman) and not ἄνθϱωπος (man as male and female), which is the word in Gen. 1:26-27 (LXX) on which his statement is based.

88J. B. Lightfoot (Colossians, ad loc.) points out Philo’s repeated use of εἰϰών as a description of the λóγος (see further on Col. 3:10, p. 147, n. 83). “Beyond the very obvious notion of likeness,” Lightfoot adds, “the word εἰϰών involves two other ideas: (1) Representation . . . (2) Manifestation . . .” (Colossians, p. 145). See also F. W. Eltester, Eikōn im Neuen Testament (Berlin, 1958), pp. 130-52.
