Section 235
See E. Schweizer, TDNT 7, pp. 98-151 (s.v. σάρξ); A. Sand, Der Begriff “Sarx” in den paulinischen Hauptbriefen (Regensburg, 1967); R. Jewett, Paul’s Anthropological Terms (Leiden, 1971); F. F. Bruce, Galatians, pp. 242-50.
The singular ἐπιθυμὶα σαϱϰóς of Gal. 5:16 comprehends the multiple επιθυμίαι τῆς σαρϰἧς ημѽν of Eph. 2:3.
Gk. τò φϱóνημα τῆς σαρϰóς (Rom. 8:6-7), contrasted with τò φϱóνημα τοῦ πνεύματος (Rom. 8:27).
Gk. τὰ θελήματα τῆς σαρϰòς ϰαὶ ϰѽν διανοιѽν. For the plural θελήματα cf. Acts 13:22. For this sense of διάνοια (which normally has the nobler sense of “intelligence”) cf. Eph. 4:13; Col. 1:21. The plural of the noun is unusual; cf., however, Num. 15:39 LXX: οὐ διαστραφήσεσθε ὀπίσω τѽν διανοιѽν υμѽν, “you shall not turn away after your own impulses” (Heb. leḇaḇḵem, “your heart”). The θελήματα of the διάνοιαι are not a different set of desires from those of the σάρξ.
Cf. the list of endowments and achievements in which Paul at one time took pride (Phil. 3:4-6), although boasting of such things now, he says, would be “speaking as a fool” (2 Cor. 11:21).
Gk. φύσει, as here (cf. also Rom. 2:14; Gal. 4:8).
