Section 90

223Gk. ϰοπιῶ, a strong word, denoting toil to the point of weariness or exhaustion (cf. 1 Cor. 4:12; 15:10; Gal. 4:11; Phil. 2:16, and the similar use of the substantive ϰόπος in 1 Cor. 15:58; 2 Cor. 6:5; 11:23, 27; 1 Thess. 2:9; 3:5; 2 Thess. 3:8). See J. Munck, Paul and the Salvation of Mankind, p. 108 with n. 4.

224Gk. ϰατὰ τὴυ ἐνέϱγειαν αὐτοṽ τὴν ἐνεϱγουμένην ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν δυνὰμει. The present participle ἐνεϱγουμένην is probably to be construed in the middle voice rather than the passive, although here the sense is not affected one way or the other. It is the power of God that is at work within Paul, so that, if the form be taken as passive, God is the implied worker (as in Phil. 2:13, θεὸς . . . ὁ ἐνεϱγῶν). Cf. Eph. 3:20 (p. 331). For the general sense cf. Eph. 3:7, ϰατὰ τὴνἐνέϱγειαν τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοṽ. Paul uses ἐνέϱγεια of supernatural power.
