31The name “Onesimus” was in widespread use throughout the Graeco-Roman world, and not exclusively as a slave-name. Two random instances may be mentioned: in a song from an Atellan farce performed before the Emperor Galba, “Onesimus has come from his country house” (Suetonius, Galba 13), and in an inscription from Eumeneia in Asian Phrygia, where the Jewish owner of a tomb (Aurelius Gaius Apella) says he prepared it “for himself and his wife and mother and his excellent friend Onesimus and his wife” (CIJ761). It even appears as the name of a woman, óνησιμοζ being an adjective of two terminations (Horsley, New Documents, p. 89, § 54).
