Chapter 88 of 343

Section 89

Section 89

2181 John 2:20, reading πάντες (with ℵB P Ψ 398 and the Sahidic version) instead of πάντα.

219The accumulation of various parts and compounds of πᾶς (“all”) is an effective rhetorical figure appearing repeatedly in the Pauline and other NT writings. Cf. Col. 3:11; Eph. 1:23; 2 Cor. 9:8, etc.

220The tense is aorist (παϱαστήσωμεν), as in v. 22 (see p. 79 with n. 184).

221In 1 Thess. 5:23 the verbs ἁγιάσαι and τηϱηθείη are aorist, and the explicit mention of the parousia indicates the epoch referred to. Sanctification begins with the new birth, it progresses throughout the Christian life by the aid of the Holy Spirit, and is consummated at the parousia. Cf. 2 Cor. 3:18; 1 John 3:2.

222Gk. τὸ τέλειον (1 Cor. 13:10). Cf. Eph. 4:13, where the ἀνὴϱ τέλειος seems to be the completed body of Christ.
