Section 44

11Cf. also Ep. Barn. 1:4; 11:8; Ep. Polyc. 3:2-3. “The triad of faith, hope and love is the quintessence of the God-given life in Christ” (G. Bornkamm, Paul, E.T. [London/New York, 1971], p. 219). A. M. Hunter (Paul and his Predecessors [London, 21961], pp. 33-35) and others have maintained that the triad belongs to the vocabulary of pre-Pauline Christianity. See also R. Reitzenstein, Die Formel Glaube, Liebe, Hoffnung bei Paulus, NGG, philologische-historische Klasse (1916), p. 393.

12The preposition here is ἐν, not εỉς (as it is in Col. 2:5, image εỉς χϱιστòν πίστεως ὑμѽν, where Christ is the object of their faith). For such a use of ἐν after πίστις cf. Eph. 1:15 (closely parallel to the present passage); also Gal. 3:26; 5:6; 1 Tim. 1:14; 3:13; 2 Tim. 1:13; 3:15. In most, perhaps all, of these passages the sphere of faith rather than the object of faith seems to be in view (cf. C. F. D. Moule, IBNTG, p. 81).
