Section 181
The aorist ἔσϰoν in ϰαϱἀν . . . πoλλὴν ἔσϰoν may refer to Paul’s reaction at the moment of receiving the news, but he continued to rejoice. Cf. 3 John 3, ἐϰάϱην . . . λίαν, of the elder’s joy when brethren brought him news of Gaius’s fidelity and hospitality. It is a pleasant coincidence that the two really personal letters in the NT should both be addressed to men so like-minded in their generosity.
Gk. σπλάγϰνα (“bowels”), as in vv. 12, 20. Cf. Col. 3:12 (p. 153 with n. 121).
The personal note is emphasized by the insertion of ἐγώ before ἐγέννησα (A lata) or of μoν after δεσμoῖς (ℵ2 C D2 Ψ with the majority of cursives).
Gk. ϰαὶ σoὶ ϰαὶ ἐμoὶ. The first ϰαὶ is omitted in ℵ2 A C D and the majority of cursives.
Gk. ὅν ἀνέπεμψά σoɩ, αὐτóν, τoῦτ’ ἔστɩν τἀ ἐμἀ σπλάγϰνα. The relative ὅν is virtually repeated in αὐτóν, which is thus emphatic (“Onesimus himself”). At varying positions, and with some modifications of the wording, a number of witnesses (including ℵ2 C D Ψ with the majority of cursives and the Latin versions) add πϱoσλαβoῦ, “receive” (from v. 17), to which αὐτóν, τoῦτ’ ἔστɩν τἀ ἐμἀ σπλάγϰνα is then the object.
