Section 118
135Two inscriptions from the 1905 report (see n. 132 above) contain the words μυηθέντες ϰαὶ ἐνβατεύσαντες (II 2); μυηθέντες ἐνεβάτευσαν (IV 4), “having been initiated they made their entrance.” The persons referred to were delegates (θεοπϱόποɩ) from various places who came to Claros to obtain an oracular response from Apollo.
136εἰϰῇ before φυσɩούμενος intensifies the idea of futility expressed by the verb; self-inflation is a fruitless exercise.
137Gk. ὑπὸ τοῦ; νοὸς τῆς σαϱϰὸς αὐοῦ (cf. Rom. 8:6-7, τὸ φϱόνημα τῆς σαϱϰός). The νοῡς is that part of the human mentality which can distinguish good from evil, can recognize and respond to the claims of God (cf. Rom. 7:21-26; 12:2), but may remain subservient to the old unregenerate outlook so long as one goes on living ϰατὰ σὰϱϰα. See J. Behm, TDNT 4, pp. 958-59 (s.v. νοῡς); BAG (s.v. νοῡς);.I. Goetzmann, NIDNTT 3, pp. 122-30 (s.v. “Reason”); J. A. T. Robinson, The Body, p. 25, n. 2. Cf. Eph. 4:17, 23 (pp. 355, 358).
