Chapter 313 of 343

56 ἀσωτία (ἀσώτως in Luke 15:13).

56 ἀσωτία (ἀσώτως in Luke 15:13).

53Cf. Eph. 6:13, ἐν τῇ ἡμέϱᾳ τῇ πονηϱᾷ (in Gal. 1:4 and here in Eph. 5:16 the adjective is likewise πονηϱóς).

54With τί τò θέλημα τοῦ ϰυϱίου here and τί ἐστɩν εὐάϱεστον in ν. 10 cf. Rom. 12:2, τί τò θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ, τò . . . εὐάϱεστον.

55μὴ μεθύσϰεσθε οἴνῳ, a paraphrase of Heb. ’al tēre’ yayin (“do not look at wine . . .”).

56ἀσωτία (ἀσώτως in Luke 15:13).

57πληϱοῦσθε ἐν πνεύματɩ. The Holy Spirit is “at once the Inspirer and the Inspiration,” says J. A. Robinson (Ephesians, pp. 203-04); he discusses the force of the preposition ἐν (whether it denotes the instrumentality or the sphere) and finds support for taking it to denote instrumentality (or agency) in 1 Cor. 12:3, 13; Rom. 15:16. He takes the interpretation to be “Let your fulness be that which comes through the Holy Spirit,” but concludes that the rendering “Be filled with the Spirit,” while “not strictly accurate, suffices to bring out the general sense of the passage.”
