Section 317

οὓτως ὀφείλουσɩν ϰαὶ oí ἄνδϱες (ℵ Ψ and the majority of cursives omit ϰαὶ).

For ὁ Xϱɩστóς D2 and the majority of cursives read ὁ ϰύϱɩος.

ℵ2 D F G Ψ and the majority of cursives add ἐϰ τῆς σαϱϰòς αὐτοῦ ϰαὶ ἐϰ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτοῦ, based apparently on Gen. 2:23 (cf. KJV).

τòν πατέϱα ϰαὶ τὴν μητέϱα (the article is omitted before both πατέϱα and μητέϱα by B D* F G).

πϱòς τὴν γυναῖϰα αὐτοῦ, for which ℵ A P 33 81 and a number of witnesses read the dative τῇ γυναɩϰὶ αὐτοῦ.

εἰς Xϱɩστòν ϰαὶ εἰς τὴν ἐϰϰλησίαν (B K and a few witnesses omit the preposition before τὴν ἐϰϰλησίαν).

It can indeed be argued that the plea for mutual submissiveness (v. 21) is attached to the preceding paragraph, the participle ὑποτασσóμενοɩ being coordinate with λαλοῦντες . . . ᾷδοντες ϰαὶ ψάλλοντες (v. 19) and εὐϰαϱɩστοῦντες (v. 20). But it is more closely attached to what follows, supplying the unexpressed verb in v. 22. On the imperatival participle ύποτασσóμενοɩ see D. Daube, “Participle and Imperative in 1 Peter,” in E. G. Selwyn, The First Epistle of St. Peter (London, 1946), pp. 467-88. On the literary unity of vv. 21-33 see J. P. Sampley, “And the Two shall become One Flesh”: A Study of Traditions in Ephesians 5:21-33 (Cambridge, 1971), pp. 104, 109-47.
