4C. L. Mitton (The Epistle to the Ephesians, pp. 70-71) argues that the “twofold adaptation” of Col. 3:25—the change of the “warning note of severity” (”he who does wrong . . .”) to a “sentence of encouragement” (”whatever good thing each one does . . .”) and the transferring of the statement about “no favoritism” from the direction to slaves to the direction to masters—“is best explained as a later modification by the writer of Ephesians.” On the other hand, W. Munro (Authority in Paul and Peter, p. 31) argues that Col. 3:18-4:1 is later than Ephesians as a whole and Eph. 5:21-6:9 in particular, since (among other things) Col. 3:20 “has the appearance of a conflation combining Eph. 5:10 with 6:1.”
