Gk. ποϱνεία, from πόϱνη (“harlot”).
Gk. ποϱνεία, from πόϱνη (“harlot”).
As perhaps in the Matthaean exceptive clauses (Matt. 5:32; 19:9); in the apostolic decree (Acts 15:20, 29; 21:25); and in 1 Cor. 5:1.
Gk. ἀϰαθαϱσία, which comes second among the “works of the flesh” in Gal. 5:19. Cf. Rom. 1:24; 6:19; Eph. 4:19; 5:2; 1 Thess. 4:17.
Demosthenes, Against Midias 119. Cf. 1 Thess. 2:3, where ἀϰαθαϱσία has been thought by some to denote more general lack of integrity.
Gk. πάθη ἀτɩμίας. Cf. Rom. 7:5, τὰ παθήματα τѽν ἁμαϱτɩѽν.
See p. 139, n. 42. For a better sense of ἐπɩθυμία see Phil. 1:23 (of Paul’s desire to depart this life and be with Christ); 1 Thess. 2:17 (of the writers’ longing to see their friends again). The word is closely associated with πάθος (as here) in 1 Thess. 4:5, μὴ ἐν πάθεɩ ἐπɩθυμίας.
The word (πλεονεξία) denotes not merely the desire to possess more than one has, but more than one ought to have, especially that which belongs to someone else. This inordinate desire can become the ruling passion of a person’s life, to the point where it does indeed become εἰδωλολατϱεία. In Mark 7:22 it is included, along with fornication, adultery, murder, and the like, among the “evil things” which come from within the human heart and convey real defilement. It is closely associated with ποϱνεία in 1 Cor. 5:10-11; 6:9-10, and with ἀϰαθαϱσία in Eph. 4:19; 5:3. In 1 Thess. 4:6 πλεονεϰτέω apparently denotes illicit designs on the womenfolk of someone else’s household.
