149 Pseudo-Cyprian, De Aleatoribus (On Gamblers) 3.

146See p. 175 with n. 21. The phrase πϱòς οὶϰοδομὴν τῆς ϰϱείας is rendered “such as will build up where it is necessary” in BAG (s.v. ϰϱεία), τῆς ϰϱείας being treated as objective genitive. J. A. Findlay suggested that ϰϱεία should be taken here in its rhetorical sense of “pointed saying” or “good story,” and rendered the verse: “Let no unclean speech issue from your lips, but such witty talk as is useful for edification, that a pleasant impression may be left on those who listen to it” (“Ephesians iv.29,” ExT 46 [1934-35], 429).

147“Grieving” the Holy Spirit is different from “quenching” him (1 Thess. 5:19), which implies the suppression of the gift of prophecy.

149Pseudo-Cyprian, De Aleatoribus (On Gamblers) 3.

150LXX αὐτοì δὲ ἠπείθησαν ϰαì παϱώξυναν τò πνεῦμα τò ἅγɩον αὐτοῦ (the verb in Eph. 4:30 is λυπεῖτε, which could have served equally well as a rendering of Heb. ’iṣṣēḇ).
