Petrus Cluniacensis.
Petrus Cluniacensis.
Petrus Cluniacensis, abbot in Burgundy, explains the number of canonical books and adds (bk. 1, epistle 2): “After these authentic books there remain also six books that we must not reject (elsewhere “keep silent about”): Judith, Tobit, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, and the two Maccabees, which though they could not reach the sublime dignity of the preceding books, yet they have been accepted by the Church because of their useful and necessary instruction.” That is, the Church received them so they might be read for instructing behavior but not to confirm dogmas.
