Second, from its efficient cause.
§ 416. (II) From its efficient cause. God, who is the principal author of Holy Scripture, was able and wanted to speak clearly to us in it. Therefore Scripture is clear. We prove the antecedent. One cannot doubt that God could speak explicitly and clearly through His holy apostles and prophets, His servants, because He is wisdom itself. Lactantius, Instit. 6, c. 21: “Cannot God, who is the creator of both mind and tongue, speak clearly? ‘ “Who has given man his mouth? Have not I?,” says the Lord’ (Exod. 4:11).” That He wanted to speak clearly is revealed from the end for which He recorded Scripture, that He wanted holy men to write the revelation of His will for the sake of our instruction to salvation (Rom. 15:4; 2 Tim. 3:15). Accordingly, we are commanded to seek eternal life in Scripture (John 5:39).
