Chapter 55 of 426

Cajetan.

Cajetan.

Cajetan.

Cajetan (otherwise called Thomas de Vio), in his preface on Joshua, admits that seven chapters in Esther and the Books of Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, and the Maccabees are not canonical. At the last chapter of Esther, he advises: “The canonical books of the Old Testament must be called back to the revision of Jerome.” In his preface to his Comment. ad Clement. 7, he says, “We owe Jerome many thanks because he removed the false accusation of the Jews from us.” All of this Cajetan wrote at Rome before the Council of Trent in the sight of the Roman pope himself.
