Chapter 302 of 426

Fifth, from the commendation of Scripture.

Fifth, from the commendation of Scripture.

Fifth, from the commendation of Scripture.

§ 443. (V) From the encomium and commendation of Scripture. (1) The apostle declares in 2 Tim. 3:[15-17] that Scripture “is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training,” in such a way “that the man of God may be perfect, equipped for every good work,” and in such a way that it “is able to make a man wise to salvation.” Therefore it is certainly the sufficient norm of doctrine according to which one must teach in the Church, according to which he must refute all heresies, according to which he must correct his life and behavior.

(2) Whatever will be the norm of the final judgment, that can also be the norm of faith and life in this life. But now, Scripture will be the norm of the final judgment according to which on that Day of Judgment an absolving sentence will be pronounced on the elect and a condemning sentence will be pronounced against the wicked (Dan. 7:10; John 12:48; Rom. 2:16; Rev. 20:2). Therefore also in this life Scripture can be the sufficient norm of faith and life.
