§ 231. [II] The Books of the Maccabees have the testimony of neither Christ nor the apostles in the New Testament. Salmeron (vol. 14, disp. 25, p. 218) brings out two statements of the New Testament in which the Books of the Maccabees are thought to be referred to: (1) “John 10:22: ‘It was the Feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem; it was winter.’ This must be taken to mean the dedication of the temple that took place under Judas Maccabeus (1 Maccabees 4:59; 2 Maccabees 10:5).” (2) “Heb. 11:35, ‘some were tortured,’ which Oecumenius refers to the Maccabees. Therefore Paul accepted this book into the canon.” We respond. In both cases only the historical narration is being stated, and this gains no authority for the Books of the Maccabees. Otherwise that apocryphal book from which Paul took the names of the magicians “Jannes” and “Jambres” and that from which Jude took the testimony of Enoch would be canonical.
