Nazianzen.

Nazianzen.

Nazianzen.

§ 82. Near Iconium lies Cappadocia, to which Peter wrote his First Epistle. Its chief city was Nazianzus, whose bishop was a theologian named Gregory, later called Nazianzen. In a poem [carmen] about the genuine parts of Scripture, he lists the canonical books in the same way as the writers up to that time had listed them. All these writers were either older than the Council of Laodicea or flourished at the same time. Nazianzen’s words are: “I reckoned twenty-two ancient books, corresponding to the writings of the Hebrews.” And he expressly adds: “If there is any beyond these, it is not among those that are genuine.”
