Cardinal Hugh [of St. Cher].
Cardinal Hugh [of St. Cher].
§ 90. We add two cardinals to Pope Gregory of Rome: Hugh [of St. Cher] and Cajetan. The former wrote six hundred years after Gregory, and the latter, three hundred after Hugh. In his prologue to Joshua, Hugh puts these lines:
Five Books of Moses, of Joshua, Judges, and Samuel;
Three particular Books of Kings twice and six prophets.
After the holy writings [Hagiographa] are Daniel, David, Esther, and Ezra,
Job, Chronicles, and the three books of Solomon.
The rest are apocryphal: Jesus, Wisdom, the Shepherd, And the Books of the Maccabees, Judith, and Tobit.
Because they are dubious, they are not listed under the canon;
But because they sing of the truth, the Church accepts them.
