Hilary.
Hilary.
§ 86. To confirm our opinion we can adduce testimonies of no less weight and clarity from teachers of the Western churches. Hilary of Poitiers was a bishop in Aquitania, the farthest part of Gaul toward the west. In his prologue to the Psalms he writes: “The Law of the Old Testament is set down in twenty-two books, so that they may agree with the number of Hebrew letters. This is according to the tradition of the ancients.” By “the ancients” he means the earlier teachers of the Christian Church.
