§ 92. From Italy we shall move into Germany. Rabanus Maurus first was abbot of Fulda and later archbishop of Mainz around the year 856. In his book De instit. clericor., c. 54, he writes: “Ezra divided the entire Old Testament into twenty-two books, that there might be as many books in the Law as there are letters [in the alphabet].” But if the controversial books are numbered among the canonical books, there will be far more than twenty-two books.
