§ 527. Since Holy Scripture was given to humans to instruct them for eternal life (John 5:39; 20:31; 2 Tim. 3:15), and yet not all people can read Scripture (for in the Church there are some “unlearned and ignorant men,” Acts 4:13) and not all things that are contained in the Scriptures are immediately clear to every reader at first glance (as we mentioned earlier in our chapter on the perspicuity of Scripture), therefore in order that the end of Scripture may be reached, interpretation of it is required. We discussed this in detail in our Methodus studii theologici; therefore in this place we shall merely touch upon the chief points.
