WOMAN MISSIONARIES (1890-91)

As the work foreign mission develops becomes more complex. New departments work are added and new insti- tutions are founded. The district mission work augmented by educational and philanthropic efforts for the improvement of the mental and material well the moral and spiritual welfare the converts Christianity. Primarily and funda- mentally, mission work the preaching and teaching the truth the Word God, order that the heathen may converted from their idols the worship and service the One, True, Living God, the Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, such preaching and teaching leads inevitably the establishment institutions and depart- ments work which, though subordinate the primary purpose the Mission, are essential its growth and de- velopment every direction. Next importance the establishment congregations is the establishment schools for the education the children of converts the knowledge the principles and practice of the truths Christianity, and such branches secular knowledge will fit them intelligent and useful citizens. Such mission schools also serve the purpose bringing children heathen parents under the influence the Gospel, and reaching, some degree least, the parents such children. The educational program every mission, further- more, must include institutions for the training native converts for work the mission teachers, evangelists, catechists and pastors. Some missions believe that they must also maintain High Schools and Colleges, but the existence of such schools higher learning justifiable only when the management and staff the school distinctly Christian. 265

Where there native pastor, he performs all the ministerial acts, examines the school children, the catechumens and inquirers, and baptizes confirms them, found properly prepared; adminis- ters the Holy Supper the communicants and exercises whatever discipline may called for congregation; directs the work the school-teachers and other native Christian helpers, whose employment, dismissal transfer lies his hands; and, time and opportunity are given him, preaches the heathen. This district work is, therefore, partly pastoral and partly evangelistic. Besides ordained foreign missionaries, woman missionaries are also employed almost every mission India, because of the peculiar position women India. Many these are confined zenanas women's apartments, which they are not permitted leave unless accompanied some male member the household, and which man outside the household admitted. The only way reach these zenana women through woman missionaries, who may enter the zenanas instruct them and their children. Usu- ally Bible-class formed each zenana, and one more hours instruction are given each week. Besides the religious instruction, the woman missionary may undertake teach the zenana women and children sewing, needle-work, English, Telugu music, order gain and hold their attention. Associated with this zenana work are the Hindu Girls' schools, sometimes called Caste Girls' schools, because, first, outcast children were not allowed attend them. In the zenana and medical work native Christian women are employed so-called Bible-women assist the woman missionaries teaching the classes nurses. For the higher education Christian girls, Central Schools, in charge woman missionaries, are established, usually with a Normal Training Department fit some the pupils for work village school-teachers. These Central Schools are boarding schools, and their primary object raise the standard the education the Christian women. Where industrial work carried mission, aims to furnish converts with means livelihood or, least, with some opportunity improve their time and their con- dition life remunerative occupation. Schade, daughter Michael Schade and his wife Justina née Klotz, was born Water Cure, Pa. When she was six years age her parents moved Monaca the Ohio River, thirty miles from Pittsburgh. After public school education she entered the State Normal School Millersville, Pa. , from which she was graduated 1886. In 1889 she became teacher the school connected with the Orphans' Home Zelionople, Pa. June, 18go, she was formally called the Foreign Missions Committee to India woman missionary. Katharine S. Sadtler, the eldest daughter the Rev. Benjamin Sadtler, ? D. D. , Baltimore, Md. , was born Shippensburg, Pa. During her early childhood her parents moved Easton, Pa. , where her father served the pastor of St. John's Church. 1862 her father became the Principal of the Lutherville Female Seminary, from which she was graduated. 1889 her cousin, Miss Amy Sadtler, offered 1 the call the Rev. C. J. Cooper, D. D. , and under the leadership Mrs. E. Pfatteicher, Mrs. R. A. Diehl, Mrs. J. A. her services woman missionary the Foreign Mission Board the General Synod and was accepted. This revived an old desire within her serve the General Council's Mission India, which she had become deeply interested after visit the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Schmidt her father's house during the summer 1885. She was accepted and called the Foreign Missions Committee the General Council the same time Miss Schade was called, June o, 1890. The commissioning service for these two zenana sisters! was held the evening October 16, 1890, St. John's Church, Philadelphia. The Rev. A. Spaeth, D. D. , Chairman of the Foreign Missions Committee, delivering the charge, said: "I ask you, dear sisters the Lord, are you willing and ready out helpers our Mission and give your- selves wholly this service, into which you now enter, for Jesus' sake, who loved you and gave himself for you? " this question the sisters responded, saying, "Yes, will the help God. " Thereupon the Rev. Dr. Spaeth took the hand each one, and said: "God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, bless, protect and sanctify you your service, filling you with faith, wisdom, love and humility, serve Him the honor His Holy Name and the good His Holy Church. Amen. " Appropriate passages Holy Scripture were recited in German the Rev. H. Grahn, D. D. , and English the Rev. William Ashmead Schaeffer, D. D. , and during the prayer commissioning the sisters knelt before the altar. The next day the woman missionaries-elect left for New York, where the Rev. G. F. Krotel, D. D. , pastor Holy Trinity Church, had arranged with the women his congre- gation for informal farewell meeting. As arranged, the women the Lutheran congregations Philadelphia and its vicinity met October 17th, the day after the commissioning, organize Women's Missionary Society. Ninety women, representing fourteen congregations, ! the motion the Rev. A. Cordes, pastor the Deaconesses' Home, the title "zenana sisters" was applied these woman missionaries after November, 1891.

The Misses Schade and Sadtler sailed from New York on October 18th, reached Colombo December 6th, Madras on the 11th, and Rajahmundry the 20th December, 1890. During the year 18go Schmidt, McCready, Pohl and Ed- man carried the work the Mission. the meetings the Mission Conference and Council January that year, held Tallapudi, the new church, though not entirely completed, was consecrated January 8th. The bell had been donated Mrs. Mary Hunter New York, who also contributed several hundred dollars toward the building fund. About Rs. 2200, $750, had been secured McCready from friends, relatives and native Christians India, and least $700 from friends America. Pohl, the superintendent the educational work Rajahmundry, proved worthy successor the lamented Groenning. His mildness and gentleness won for him the confidence and love his pupils and their parents; his piety and spiritual-mindedness, their esteem and respect; his ability teacher, their obedience and loyalty. The school opened with unusually large number pupils January, 18go. additional class, the sixth standard, was organized, and the school was awarded govern- ment grant. We are very careful make them familiar with the precious treasures divine truth which the Lord has given our Church, that they may hold the banner our Con- fessions faithfully unto the end. this, then, added such general knowledge they may able gain. " Poh] described the schoolbuildings well adapted their purpose. The main building contained three smaller and four larger rooms, the largest having been added Groenning. The lowest class, however, had meet the verandah; 103 boys and 42 girls were enrolled January, 18go. They were taught six teachers, all but one whom were Chris- tians; 95 boys and girls were housed the boarding depart- ment, consisting four small buildings the church com- pound, which were filled overflowing. Pohl furnished the following interesting description day the life the school: "Before suarise the children, after washing, eat the cold rice that was left from the supper the previous day. sunrise the church bell summons them for morning prayer. The school begins 7 o'clock and closes for the morning 11.30. noon dinner served. 2 p. M. the girls and some the boys spend some time sewing and mending under the direction wife. During the afternoon some of the children are employed sweeping the schoolrooms and putting them order for the next day. The larger pupils, however, spend the hour from four five class. After that comes the recreation hour. Some engage gymnastics, others some useful work the grounds, watering the plants, removing rubbish, etc. Some Mr. Schmidt's compound learn carpentering. The girls, carrying vessels on their heads, hasten the Godavery River bring drink- ing-water, filling five large vessels for the next day. 6 o'clock the boys bathe the Godavery. of the Mohammedan Girls' School which was now called the Artman Poor Mohammedan Girls' School. Sarah, Christian, assisted her giving some instruction the Christian re- ligion Telugu. The teachers the Hindu Girls' School were P. V. Ratnam, Ramachandra Rao and Hindu, while Goraza conducted the girls and from the school. Edman and his family first occupied Mrs. Taylor's bungalow, which was leased the Mission. June 16, 1890, they moved Samulkot, Edman having been assigned to that district. Besides touring the Velpur district, spending most his time and around Bhimawaram, where within radius five miles over 1000 Christians resided and where planned to build large church for them, Schmidt erected house the Riverdale compound, adjoining the Caste Girls' School, for use printery and book-store. The latter enterprise was managed Mrs. Schmidt who, 1890, sold many 4238 Bibles, books and pamphlets. Schmidt also began the erec- tion the so-called Zenana Home, the residence the zenana sisters, and continued the building the Dowlaishwaram bungalow. On Pentecost, 18go, unusually interesting ceremony was performed St. Paul's Church, when Brahmin, Jaga- natham, and Mala, Veera Emmanuel Razulu, were baptized at the same time, thus showing how Christianity breaks down the caste distinctions. In August, 18go, Mr. John G. Haas Lancaster, Pa. , whom Dr. Schmidt his visit America and afterward through correspondence had interested the enterprise, began send money him for the endowment Christian com- munity, centered around church with native pastor. Schmidt selected Lankapuram near Mahadevipatnam the location the community and began the purchase land there and elsewhere the Bhimawaram taluk, which arranged rent sell easy terms poor but deserving Christians who were form the community. Gradually this enterprise, financed entirely Mr. Haas, assumed con- siderable proportions; but was altogether private under- taking, which the Foreign Missions Committee had official knowledge and over which never attempted exercise control. According the agreement between the Breklum Society and the Foreign Missions Committee Pohl had been loaned to the Rajahmundry Mission for only year. the end the year, however, one had been found take his place as the head the educational work, and the Breklum Society, at the earnest solicitation the Committee, extended the period the close the year 1891. March 4, 1891, was high day the history the Rajah- mundry school which that year received the name The Seminary, when twenty-one students, the largest number sent out from this school that time, were formally and solemnly installed teachers. "On Tuesday, " wrote Pohl, "the schoolhouse was tastefully decorated with palm branches, and the students who were graduated gave what may termed farewell luncheon the pupils who were remain the school. What impressed most favorably was the fact that, they were now all together for the last time, they, first all, united singing the Lord hymn praise and, then, bended knees, oftered prayers and supplications. the evening all attended the Preparatory Service the church, for wanted mark the ending our past work and the beginning the new with the assurance the divine pardon our sins. commissioning the teachers their respective fields work occurred Wednesday morning. After had all joined prayer once more our home, proceeded the church. After the regular liturgical service and the lesson, Brother Schmidt addressed the young men. Then I, who had taken much delight teaching them, delivered brief address. After the chanting Psalm 100 the teachers- elect came the altar and Brother Schmidt asked them: "Dear Brethren the Lord, the presence Almighty God and this congregation, now ask you: Are you ready and willing devote yourselves fully and sincerely the service which you have been appointed this day; and, for Jesus' sake, Who gave Himself for you, will you fulfill your calling with all fidelity, and adorn with holy life con- formity with the teachings our Evangelical Lutheran Church? " Each turn answered: "Yes, with the help God. " Then they were set apart for their work teachers by the laying hands and the following form consecra- tion: "God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, bless, protect, sanctify and cause you abound faith, wisdom, love and sincerity, order that you may serve Him for the glory His Name and for the edifying His Holy Church; and the end may you obtain everlasting life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. " Thereupon the congre- gation said, "Amen. " Then laid hand the head each one, repeating appropriate passages Holy Scripture. Prayer was offered Brother Schmidt and the Holy Com- munion followed. The service closed with the benediction and the hymn "Abide with us, our Saviour. " At the special request the teachers who had graduated from the Seminary and with the approval the Mission Council, Pohl devoted the months June and July special normal course for their benefit. Thirty-three attended this course, which was pronounced have been decided suc- cess. recent years more attention has been given the normal training teachers, which has been found necessary preparation for efficient work the part the native assistants.

Miss Schade took charge the Artman Poor Mohammedan Girls' School April, and Miss Sadtler, the Caste Girls' School July, 1891. Both resided with the Schmidts the Riverdale bungalow until the Zenana Home was completed. Calvin F. Kuder was the twelfth ordained missionary sent out the General Coun- cil India. was born April 10, 1864, Laurys, Lehigh County, Pa. After having been graduated from Roanoke Col- lege, Salem, Va. , entered the Evangelical Lutheran Theo- logical Seminary Philadelphia. While member the middle class the Seminary volunteered India the service the Foreign Missions Committee. was called subject his ordination which occurred the meeting the Pennsylvania Ministerium Emmanuel Church, Pottstown, Pa. , May 26, 1891. The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Kuder sailed from Phila- delphia September 2d, and reached Rajahmundry November 14, 1891. In its report the General Council Buffalo, 1891, the Foreign Missions Committee, besides giving the names forty-two individuals, schools and societies supporting boys' scholarships, and eighteen supporting girls' scholarships, reported twenty teachers and other native workers supported by patrons America. The Riverdale Hindu Girls' School was being supported the Sunday schools St. John's and St. Mark's churches Philadelphia; the Mohammedan Girls' School, the Young Ladies' Society and the Sunday school Holy Trinity Church, New York City; the school Gorlamudi the Children's Missionary Society Emmanuel Swedish Church Chicago, and the school Srirangapatnam, by the Ladies' Missionary Society the church last men- tioned. ! The average annual contribution from all sources for the biennium 18go-91 was $12,675.80; the average annual ex- penditure, $12,089.32, showing excess expenditure. The floating indebtedness $1000 remained unpaid. Among the items income noted were several hundreds dollars each year, derived from the net proceeds the German and English publications the General Council.
