THE HAND DEATH (1888-89)

UNDER the Rules and Regulations which went into effect in the Mission the beginning the year 1887, the adminis- tration the field was placed the hands the foreign missionaries who met semi-annually Mission Council. To this Council was delegated the duty considering and recommending the Home Committee, with whom the final decision rested, whatever measures were necessary for the proper administration and development the mission work, the erection buildings, the appointment native agents, the schools and whatever pertained the care and control of the Mission. each meeting the Council each mission- ary was required submit written semi-annual report all official acts and expenditures, and estimate expenses for the coming six months, approved the vote the Council and sent official communication the Com- mittee America for its sanction amendment. The Rules and Regulations also provided for Annual Conference foreign missionaries, native agents and dele- gates native congregations, which was receive the written reports the pastors, catechists and evangelists, and oral reports the teachers, and consider such matters per- tained their work. The Conference met January 1-4, 1888, beginning Sunday with divine services St. Paul's Church. After the formal opening Monday morning Schmidt was elected President; Dietrich, English Secretary; and C. James, Telugu Secretary. Business sessions were held every morning and public meetings every evening. prayer-meetings the homes Christians was recommended. The Mission Council met January 6-10, 1888. Poulsen was elected President and Schmidt, Secretary. Dietrich took charge the Samulkot district after Poulsen's departure, attempting look after addition his work in the Jegurupad district. Concerning the Jegurupad con- gregation and school Dietrich wrote: "Here have nice congregation, substantial church building and house for the pastor. Rev. Joseph's daughter teaches the school, which numbers about 25 pupils. She has done real good work. Of all the schools the out-stations hers stands first. the congregation have introduced the full liturgical service. " Concerning the work Muramunda said: "At Mura- munda, also, have nice congregation and substantial school building. Owing the lack qualified teacher the school poor condition and the congregation not what might be. " other villages the Jegurupad district the so-called congregations "are not yet worthy the name, " the missionary's language. Dowlaishwaram, however, was fast approaching the state and character regular congregation, for 1888 the chapel was enlarged so seat about two hundred persons, sitting cross-legged on the floor. As result the decreased income from America the boarding schools Rajahmundry were closed during January and February, 1888. Groenning took advantage this vacation make visit the Schleswig-Holstein Mission stations Salur and Jeypur. the first May the schools were reopened with several new teachers. V. Jacob left the Government College devote year teaching in the Mission School. Paradesi, graduate the school, took Alfred's place! teacher the two lower classes. McCready closed the Mohammedan Boys' School March 15, 1888; but was continued for while longer the School Union Rajahmundry. June 1st the Moham- medan Girls' School was transferred McCready Groenning who took charge the name the Mission with the understanding that its '"gosha, '" secluded char- acter, was abolished, because that prevented direct supervision the missionary. Rather than comply with this requirement the parents the girls forbade their daughters to attend the school, and was teniporarily closed. Dietrich who, 1888, baptized many 33 persons in Dowlaishwaram, cast interesting side-light the mission work the following language: "The Hindus seem never happy than when they are engaged wedding, a law-suit making debts. The Christian converts seem unable shake off this characteristic. pitiable note that nearly two-thirds our mission agents are debt. I have taken special notice this evil during the last six months and fully persuaded that has had baneful influence our mission work. Agents contract debts and then allow the exorbitant interest accumulate, until be- comes impossible for them liquidate them. The conse- quence that they shirk their debts, litigation follows, and in the end they disgrace the Christian name. " On November 26, 1888, McCready laid the corner-stone out-stations, 54. of the new St. Peter's Church Tallapudi. had secured quite number subscriptions from relatives and friends India and America, well little money from his dis- trict teachers and Christians; but the funds came slowly and the completion the building was considerably delayed. With money sent the Rev. C. W. Groenning, Schmidt, on September 28th, secured three lots the village Bhima- waram site for proposed church, paying Rs. 6co for them. From the same source Groenning received sufficient funds erect addition the school building Rajah- mundry. the close the year 12 young men were per- mitted leave the school assigned positions teachers, although they had not actually finished the course outlined by Groenning. D, , whose death occurred October 15, 1888, Phoeenixville, Pa. , while his way from Pottstown Philadelphia. was born August 26, 1827, Gettysburg, Pa. Ordained in 1844, served congregations Martinsburg and Shep- herdstown, Va. , Easton, Pa. (St. John's), Reading, Pa. (St. James'), and Pottstown, Pa. (Church the Transfigura- tion). was recognized leader the General Council and served number its most important committees, notably the Church Book and the Foreign Missions Com- mittees. All the reports the Foreign Missions Committee to the General Council from the beginning until 1887 were prepared him. was the English Recording and Corre- sponding Secretary the Committee without interruption for twelve years, from the time the Committee was first ap- pointed 1876; and before that had served the same offices the Executive Committee the Ministerium Pennsylvania. familiar with all its details, heartily devoted its earnest and judicious administration and hopeful great success, that seemed his colleagues largely concentrate himself the life the Committee. His counsels were judi- cious, his action was wise and prompt, and appeared them indispensable. " The Foreign Missions Committee adopted the following minute October 22d: "The Committee Foreign Missions, under deep sense personal bereavement, shares the pro- found sorrow which has been awakened many hearts the decease their late English Secretary, the Rev. Dr. B. M. Schmucker. They hereby bear testimony his personal worth and the value his service the official position which filled faithfully and long connection with this Committee. Thorough his acquaintance with our foreign mission work, familiar with all its details, prompt and diligent all the divers labors his office, commanded, as co-laborer, our fraternal love and highest esteem, and was acknowledged leader who knew what ought done, and whom was safe for follow. " How Dr. Schmucker was esteemed India may learned from President Schmidt's report the Missionary Confer- ence, held Tallapudi January, 1889, from which the following quoted: "He was the home-leader. Since 1869 all orders went through his hands, and remitted all money contributed for our Mission. . . . The principal leader our Mission has ceased work for us; but are not left destitute while God abides with us. " In its report the General Council Minneapolis, Sep- tember 13-19, 1888, ! the Foreign Missions Committee incor- porated this significant passage: "In some parts our Church-we may mention the Pittsburgh Synod especially-- there seems increased interest our work, and earnest efforts are put forth and faithful prayers are offered ! the place the Rev. M. J. Englund the General Council, 1888, elected the Rev. P. J. O. Cornell, and added the following members: The Revs. W. J. Mann, D. D. , L. P. Bender and E. J. Pohle. The Rev. William Ashmead Schaeffer was elected the Committee succeed Dr. Schmuckler the English recording and corresponding secretary.

in behalf the great cause bringing the heathen know the true God and Jesus Christ, Whom hath sent. Never- theless, are convinced that still more generous interest in foreign missions should manifested the congregations and people connected with the General Council. That have but one mission station heathen lands hardly the credit our part the Church; and that this station not better supported, that its boundaries might yet more widely extended, fact that, respectfully submit, should engage our earnest attention, haply measures might adopted, commending themselves our people, which would secure for this work such generous support would enable us send out more missionaries, locate new stations, erect the necessary churches, schoolbuildings and dwellings, and in every possible way develop the field the glory God and the salvation souls. " The gratification the Committee the increasing in- terest and effort the Church home was caused the increased income, which amounted $10,288.20, com- pared with $9066.88 during the previous year. Nevertheless, there was deficit $19.69, and indebtedness $1000 to Mrs. A. Spaeth Philadelphia, who had loaned the Committee that sum. The year 1889 began auspiciously both the Mission and in the Church home. strong appeal the Foreign Missions Committee, printed the March and April issues of "The Foreign Missionary' and 'IMlissionsbote, " copies which were distributed broadcast throughout the Church, resulted increased contributions, that June was resolved increase the quarterly remittances the Mission for general expenses from $1000 $1300. The Committee, moreover, agreed give two rupees for every one contributed by the native Christians for the Tallapudi church. Further- more, Dietrich was authorized proceed with the erection a house for his catechist, J. William, and begin what was intended the Artman Memorial bungalow Dowlaish- waram, the cost which was estimated $18co. Nearly $1000 had already been collected.

In the Mission the year began, usual, with the meetings of the Mission Conference and the Council, which were held for the first time outside Rajahmundry, Tallapudi. McCready had planned finish the church time for these meetings, but his plans miscarried, for the masons had done their work poorly that the walls the new building had be torn down again. consequence the meetings were held temporary structure palm leaves. About sixty native agents attended the Conference, which lasted from Sunday, January sth, Thursday afternoon, , January gth. was resolved "that those who not attend the Preparatory Service excluded from the Lord's Table, except under exceptional circumstances. " After lengthy discussion the policy adopted with regard the use wine and '"toddy, " the Conference resolved ''that this Conference the opinion that although the use wine and fermented liquor not itself sinful, nevertheless, should be observed, rule, that all mission agents should abstain from strong drink and not take part any feast where strong drink used excess. Also, that they should endeavor teach all converts live soberly; and that mission agent goes for drink toddy liquor shop found drunken, he must disciplined, and does not discontinue such habits, must not remain the service the Mission. " An important decision was reached the Mission Council, held directly after the Conference, when was resolved place all mission schools under government supervision after November, 1889. Groenning's finished manuscript Telugu on the History the Old Testament was recommended for publication. ! School. Instead being driven from their homes the school bullock bandy, formerly, the girls were asked to walk, and did so, but not without complaining somewhat of the public exposure which necessitated. first the Mohammedan teacher, Abdul Rahim Sheriff, agreed teach the Christian religion Hindustani; but day after the school opened declared that honest Mohammedan he could not possibly so. offered, however, interpret into Hindustani whatever instruction Christianity might given Telugu teacher. Thereupon Mrs. Groenning de- voted hour day teaching Old Testament history and Scripture passages translated the Mohammedan. After this hour religion Mrs. Groenning spent another among the girls, teaching them how sew. Under her direction and that Mrs. Schmidt the other Rajahmundry schools as many 250 300 garments were made year, which were distributed Christmas presents the districts. The Samulkot boarding school was discontinued, and the 5 boys and 1 girl remaining were sent Rajahmundry. On January 23, 1889, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt started the "Dove Peace" for trip through the canals the delta. "Mrs. Schmidt, " wrote her husband, "makes her special work when are tours conduct the examination the schools, and get through considerably more work this divided labor. " The school children were usually brought their teachers the boat, accompanied their parents, relatives and friends. school examination, described follows, may serve typical example: "To-day the school marched the side our boat and the examination began at once. Sriramulu had brought the school register from the village. The attendance had been noted down fair. Half a dozen boys were still spelling, and many had begun read the First Telugu Book. The best pupils could repeat the Lord's Prayer and part the Apostles' Creed. They also knew little about the birth Christ and his death, and something his miracles. About twenty men and women and some children stood the shore, evidently feeling quite proud that these children had mastered the first steps

knowledge. Every boy got jacket and the best girls skirt, besides some fruit, sweet-meats and picture card. The little girl who had attended 180 days seven months received doll special prize. " At Chittipet, ten miles from Rajahmundry, our mis- sionaries, they passed their house-boat, saw the Plymouth Brethren missionary located there, actively engaged super- intending the erection church. The Plymouth Brethren mission intruded even farther into our field locating Mis- sionary Miles Dowlaishwaram, less than five miles from Rajahmundry, and building bungalow for him there, close to the one which Dietrich was beginning erect. In March Schmidt went Korukonda preach the multitudes the annual festival there. was assisted number native agents and accompanied the Rev. A. Theophilus, the superintendent colporteurs for the Madras Bible Society. Missionary Heelis from Narsapur also went to the festival. "We missionaries, " wrote Schmidt, 'had large crowds around us, and wife sat under tree with the wife B. John, our teacher Korukonda, and they had large crowd women around them, who were not little astonished hear native woman read the Word God. " On the way farther north visit was paid Srirangapatnam, where school enrolling 20 pupils had just been begun. N. Prakasam was the teacher. still working that place. In Kovur, the bank the Godavery River opposite Rajahmundry, where McCready had succeeded making number converts from the Madiga class, induced the Christians build large prayer-house and smaller building for the teacher ground donated two brothers, one whom was convert. Tallapudi work the new church was slowly progressing. April, 1889, McCready made trip the Godavery River the gorge (Bison Hill), visiting every village the right bank the river the return voyage. printing-press Rajahmundry. The funds for the necessary outfit the printery had been contributed Mrs. C. W. Schaeffer. Mrs. Schmidt proceeded Kotagiri, Nilgiri Hills, whither her husband followed, spend the hot season. "Dietrich died June 11th. " This was the sad and sudden intelligence which was telegraphed Groenning Rajah- mundry Schmidt Kotagiri, and cabled the latter from Madras America. Saturday, June 8, 1889, had been exceptionally hot day. The thermometer registered 150 degrees the sun noon. Dietrich was busily engaged Dowlaishwaram superintend- ing the laying the foundation the new bungalow. worked the hot sun all day long. Robust and strong, believed could endure much the natives. ! Tired and overheated, lay down the little verandah the catechist's house rest for the night. While slept the monsoon broke over the land with cyclonic force. The rain fell torrents. The temperature dropped many de- grees. midnight Dietrich awoke chilled and wet through and through. called his catechist who helped him chair from which fell swoon. The symptoms once became alarming that Groenning was summoned from Rajahmundry. Although was Whitsunday, Groenning came, leaving Pastor Paulus who happened Rajah- mundry, charge the services. Dietrich was removed to Groenning's home Rajahmundry, and the assistant surgeon was called in. diagnosed the case not seri- ous and said that the patient would quite well again after few days' rest. Dietrich seemed improve under medical treatment; but suddenly, the morning the 11th of June, his temperature rose 107 degrees, and before noon he passed away. Because the city officials insisted it, his body was buried before sun-down the mission cemetery. Pastor Paulus conducted the service the church and Groenning the grave. 1 Groenning wrote that was prone take risks. the house-boat was not handy, would travel ordinary radar: boat. happened travelling without tent, would sleep over night under tree like the natives.

Dietrich was missionary India only six and one-half years. Endowed with even temperament, sturdy health and happy disposition, seemed though were emi- nently fitted endure the hardships the chimate and the mission work India. Groenning described him gen- erous, affectionate, sociable, contented and cheerful man, noble friend, faithful counsellor, indefatigable worker. His affectionate and cheerful voice and manner won the hearts, especially the children; his earnestness impressed the young men, especially the Brahmins. The high esteem which was held was shown the fact that wherever the physician who attended him went, had answer solicitous inquiries concerning the sick missionary. died unmarried; but the time his death was engaged married a young lady who was member Holy Trinity Church Philadelphia, and was looking forward her coming India, and the completion the Dowlaishwaram bungalow which they were live. The Foreign Missions Committee adopted the following minute his death: 'Information the death our late missionary, the Rev. F. S. Dietrich, awakened the Com- mittee Foreign Missions sense profound sorrow; and whilst humbly bow the Divine Will that has taken him his rest and his reward, shall long lament our loss and the loss the Mission has sustained his departure. We cherish with fondness and gratitude God the memory of the excellent traits that marked him man, and the happy endowments which exemplified Christian mis- sionary. His agreeable manners, his studious habits, his unaffected sincerity, the earnestness and purity his heart, and his devout consecration the service our Lord, were known and seen all men who moved within the sphere his companionship his native land. His missionary life was growth that developed itself into correct apprecia- tion the needs the heathen and the best methods for meeting them; enterprise spirit that was once varied and successful; activity that never tired; hope that was always rejoicing; and plentifully sowing the

good seed the Word, that will bear fruit unto eternal life. " After Dietrich's death McCready took charge the Samul- kot district addition his work the Tallapudi district; Schmidt, besides his other work, continued the building the Dowlaishwaram bungalow; Groenning, addition his school work, took charge the Dowlaishwaram congrega- tion and the Jegurupad district. Moreover, Groenning was elected member the municipal board Rajahmundry, and during the absence its chairman assumed the duties of that office. also was member the Local Fund Board. Scarcely had the Church home recovered from its bereave- ment over the loss Missionary Dietrich, when the news another death reached it. Groenning died even more suddenly than Dietrich. Mrs. Groenning communicated the sad in- telligence follows: "On the ninth July dearly be- loved husband, William Groenning, fell asleep. firm faith and with clear confession went home his Saviour. The cholera took him off day. " On July 7, 1889, Groenning had preached Dowlaishwaram and baptized six persons. The next day signed ordi- nance, acting chairman the municipality Rajahmun- dry, directing that certain measures carried out prevent the spread cholera, which had broken out the city. personally directed the work scavengers they filled hole his yard with refuse gathered from the city. Here must have contracted the dreaded disease. Monday afternoon he became very ill. seven the evening all the symptoms pointed cholera. " could not, yet, yield the thought that his end was approaching, and said, 'You may get well again. The Lord

At four o'clock the afternoon his body was interred the side that his brother Charles, who had died the same disease Rajahmundry, child, 1865. ''Crushed, " said Schmidt, "we all stood around the grave. Our Mission had lost force the like which never had before and may not soon have again. " The Foreign Missions Committee paid him very high tribute. "In the sudden and unexpected death our dear brother, " reads the minute, "we experienced the heaviest blow which our Mission has ever suffered. . . . the few years during which God's providence was permitted work our Mission, particularly superintendent our educational institution, had done most noble and effective service all faithfulness and conscientiousness, with clear insight into the character the work, with great energy and unselfish devotion our Mission, the fruits which may hope reap coming years. " Mrs. Groenning left Rajahmundry for Bremen August 22d. Before leaving, farewell service St. Paul's Church, a boy handed her bag containing 50 rupees gift love and esteem the part the native Christians. Before the news Groenning's death had reached the Foreign Missions Committee the Rev. Emanuel Edman, M. D. had volunteered take the place Dietrich and had been accepted. Emanuel Edman, the eleventh foreign missionary the General Council, was born Sweden 1857. While pastor of the Swedish Lutheran Church New Haven, Conn. , studied medicine for three years. then went Prince- may yet restore you. you trust Him, that will all things right? ' 'Yes, will all things right, " was the dying man's reply. Mrs. Groenning then repeated Psalm 23: 4, and asked him, 'Is your Saviour with you? ' 'Yes, ' said he, 'yes, has redeemed me; that faith and comfort. For to die gain, salvation-salvation! " While suffering from the cramp and the difficulty breathing, said, 'He was more patient when died for us. ' When Mrs. Groenning began, saying, 'I the resurrection and the life; he that believeth me'-Mr. Groenning continued, 'shall never come into condemnation, " and Mrs. Groenning finished the sentence, 'but has passed from death life. " After Mrs. Groenning had repeated the verse, 'I have loved thee with everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness have drawn thee, " Mr. Groenning replied, saying, 'Abba, Father. "
