Augustine the Philosopher: Studies

Augustine's lifestyle and mood in this transitional period from Cassiciacum to Thagaste (387 to 391) are well evoked in Brown, Augustine of Hippo, pp. 115–37. A good introduction to the philosophical dimensions of Augustine's thought is the collection of essays edited by Eleonore Stump and Norman Kretzmann, eds., The Cambridge Companion to Augustine (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001). For brief, cogent perspectives, see Goulven Madec, Saint Augustin et la philosophie: Notes critiques, Collections des Études Augustiniennes, Série Antiquité 149 (Paris: Institut d'Études Augustiniennes, 1996). Also excellent is John M. Rist, Augustine: Ancient Thought Baptized (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1994). Below I have listed two types of works: (i) ones that focus on Augustine's more philosophically oriented early treatises; (ii) ones that more broadly examine underlying philosophical concerns spanning the course of his career: Bouton-Touboulic, Anne Isabelle. Augustine the Bishop: Studies

Peter Brown's and Serge Lancel's biographies offer helpful portraits of Augustine the bishop. Brown captures the mood and atmosphere of Augustine's congregation and North African Christianity (pp. 183–206); Lancel does an excellent job on matters of archeology and incorporates perspectives from the recent Divjak letters (pp. 235–70). The classic study is by Frederic van der Meer, Augustine the Bishop: The Life and Work of a Father of the Church, trans. B. Battershaw and G. R. Lamb (London: Sheed and Ward, 1961); while badly dated in certain ways, it still has much to offer. The publication of 31 letters discovered by Johannes Divjak has opened new perspectives, especially on Augustine's later years; see the studies in Claude Lepelley, ed., Les Lettres de saint Augustin découvertes par Johannes Divjak, Collection des Études Augustiniennes, Série Antiquité 98 (Paris: Études Augustiniennes, 1983).
