Reference Works

For an excellent up-to-date reference work, see Allan Fitzgerald, ed., Augustine Through the Ages: An Encyclopedia (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1999). Over 900 pages, this surveys every aspect of Augustine's life, writings, theology, and influence; articles are written by the leading English-speaking Augustinian scholars. Also excellent, but incomplete, is the Augustinus-Lexikon, ed. Cornelius Mayer (Basel: Schwabe, 1986– ), 3 vols. to date; this massive encyclopedia, with individual articles written in either German or English or French, is admirably ambitious but seems likely to take decades to complete.

Journals and Collections of Essays

There are major journals that specialize in the study of Augustine, notably, Augustinian Studies, Revue des Études Augustiniennes, Recherches Augustiniennes, and Augustiniana. Other major journals regularly include essays on Augustine, notably, Journal of Early Christian Studies, Journal of Theological Studies, Revue Bénédictine, and Vigiliae Christianae. Valuable essays appear also in various festschrifts, compilations, and conference proceedings. Those focused on individual topics or individual texts are listed later under the appropriate chapter. Listed below are those that cover a wide miscellany of topics: Bonner, Gerald. Church and Faith in the Patristic Tradition: Augustine, Pelagianism and Early Christian Northumbria. Collected Studies. London: Variorum Reprints, 1996. Brown, Peter. Religion and Society in the Age of St. Augustine. 1972; reprint: Eugene, OR: Wipf & Stock, 2007. Bruning, Bernard, ed. Collectanea Augustiniana: Mélanges T. J. van Bavel. 2 vols. Louvain: Leuven University Press, 1990.
