Early Christianity: History and Theology

It is vital to see Augustine's life and thought within the broader history and theology of early Christianity. The scholarly literature is obviously vast, but what follows are some essentials. There are several excellent (and massive) overviews of the history: Henry Chadwick, The Church in Ancient Society: From Galilee to Gregory the Great, Oxford History of the Christian Church (New York: Oxford University Press, 2001); Frances Young and Margaret Mitchell, eds. Origins to Constantine, Cambridge History of Christianity, vol. 1 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005); and Augustine Casiday and Frederick W. Norris, eds., Constantine to c. 600, Cambridge History of Christianity, vol. 2 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2007). For a survey of the literature and theology of early Christianity, see Frances Young, Lewis Ayres, and Andrew Louth, eds., The Cambridge History of Early Christian Literature (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004). Also excellent is Philip F. Esler, ed., The Early Christian World, 2 vols. (New York: Routledge, 2000). See also:
