B. Some Despise the Soul in Practice.
1. They abuse the soul. The soul is abused when it is devoted to the service of Satan; when it is defiled with the pollutions of sin; when deceived by lies and falsehoods; when distracted and disquieted with inordinate cares or griefs about this world and its things; when it has an inordinate complacency and repose.in the world.
2. They hazard the soul. The soul is hazarded when exposed to the wrath of God by wilful sin; when we build our lives upon the sand instead of the rock; when we give them as a pawn for the gains of this world.
3. They neglect the soul. They despise their soul who neglect to take care of its sin-wounds, who fail to get the wants of the soul supplied, who fail to guard their soul, who neglect the soul's eternal welfare.
4, They consider the body more important than the soul. Such employ the soul only to serve their bodies, whereas the body was made to serve the soul. They injure the soul to please the body. They endanger the soul to please the body.
II. THE FOLLY OF DESPISING THE SOUL.
A. This Is Seen When We Consider the Nature of the Soul.
1. It is of divine origin. The soul of man is of divine origin; it was not made of dust as the body was, but it was the breath of the Almighty. It had the image of God stamped upon it and is the masterpiece of God's workmanship on the earth.
2. It can know God. It is capable of knowing God and conversing with Him; it is capable of being sanctified by the spirit and grace of God; it is capable of being glorified with God, of seeing Him as He is.
3. It is capable of self-consciousness, Self-consciousness is in the nature of the soul. The soul is capable of reflecting upon itself and conversing with itself.
