CLASSIC SERMON OUTLINES — Matthew Henry

II. THE GROUND FOR THE CERTAINTY OF THE COMING OF THE YEAR OF THE REDEEMED.

A. The Justice and Righteousness of God.

1. The fact of God's justice and righteousness. Though clouds and darkness are round about God so that we know not the way that He takes, yet judgment and justice are the habitation of His throne; and so will it appear when the mystery of God shall be finished and the heavens shall declare His righteousness.

2. The encouragement of God's justice and righteousness. Look up with an eye of faith to heaven above and see the Lord God Omnipotent upon a throne, high and lifted up; the throne of glory, the throne of government which He has prepared and established in the heavens.

3. The certainty of God's just and righteous acts. They are mistaken who think that God has forsaken the earth; who say in their hearts: "God hath forgotten" and "will not require it" (Psalm 10:11, 13). The day is coming when it shall be evident and every man will own it. "Verily there is a reward for the righteous; verily there is a God that judgeth the earth" (Psalm 58:10): B. The Performance of God's Promises to His People in All Ages.

1. This is evidenced in the history of the Jewish nation. God came to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage. In the times of the judges first one enemy and then another oppressed them, but in due time God raised up deliverers. The Babylonian captivity came to an end.

2. This is evidenced in the history of the Christian church. The Christian church has been often afflicted. Many have been the troubles of the followers of Christ, but the Lord has delivered them out of them all.

Il. THE ENCOURAGEMENT TO HOPE FOR THE APPROACHING OF THE YEAR OF THE REDEEMED.

A. The Measure of Iniquity Is Increasing.

The measure of the iniquity of the church's enemies fills swiftly. The powers with which we are contesting seem to grow more and more false phe Year of the Redeemed and treacherous, cruel, and barbarous; which cannot but ripen their vintage for the great winepress of the wrath of God (Revelation 14:19).

B. The Present Shaping of Affairs Presents a Hopeful Prospect.

As for God, His work is perfect; when He begins He will make an end. What we have received from God emboldens us to expect more.

IV. THE CHRISTIAN'S DUTY IN REFERENCE TO THE YEAR OF THE REDEEMED.

A. It Is His Duty to Engage in Earnest Prayer.

When Daniel understood by books that the seventy years of Jerusalem's desolations were expiring, he set his face to seek the Lord by prayer and supplication, with fasting. When we see mercies coming toward us let us meet them by our prayers.

B. It Is His Duty to Be Obedient to the Laws of Love and Holiness.

C. It Is His Duty to Patiently Wait for the Year of the Redeemed.

CONCLUSION
