CLASSIC SERMON OUTLINES — Alexander Maclaren

2. The picture presented by the word. "Reaching out over" is the full though clumsy rendering of the word; and it gives us the picture of a runner with his whole body thrown forward, his hand extended and his eye reaching even further than his hand, in eager anticipation of the mark and _ the prize.

B. The Incentive of the Unattained.

The idealists see the unattained burning so clearly before them that all the unattained seems as nothing in their eyes. So life is saved from commonplace, is happily strung into fresh effort, is redeemed from flagging, _ monotony, and weariness.

1. It gives an element of nobility to the lives of idealists.

2. It saves life from the commonplace.

C. The Measure of Attainment May Be Estimated by the Extent to Which the Unattained Is Clear to Us.

1. The blessing of having a boundless future. They who have a boundless future before them have an endless source of inspiration, of energy, of _ buoyancy granted to them.

2. The Christian has the greatest vision of a boundless future. No man has such an absolutely boundless vision of the future as we have if we are Christian people. Only we can look thus forward.

CONCLUSION

Make God's aim your aim; concentrate your life's efforts upon it; Pursue it with a wise forgetfulness; pursue it with an eager confidence of anticipation that shall not be put to shame.
