A WORTHY TRIBUTE TO A GODLY MOTHER

Her children shall rise up, and call her blessed.

—-PROVERBS 31:28

THIS is part of the just debt owing to the virtuous woman that answers the characters laid down in the foregoing verses; and part of the reward promised and secured to her by Him who in both worlds is and will be "the Rewarder of them that diligently seek and serve Him."

I. THE CHARACTER OF THE MOTHER DESERVING THE TRIBUTE.

A. She Is Wise and Kind (Verse 26).

1. The effects of her wisdom. Wisdom dictates her conversation. By opening the mouth with wisdom there is instilled in children's minds what they will afterwards employ. Such children will have reason to call their mother blessed for setting them an example for the good government of a tongue.

2. The description of her kindness. She is truly kind, that is, wisely so; she is tender to her children's comfort, but not indulgent of her children's follies. The mother who has this law in her tongue and in her heart and is always under its commands and regulations gains her children's love and is entitled to their good word.
