CLASSIC SERMON OUTLINES — Matthew Henry

II. ACONSTANT ATTENDANCE UPON GOD.

A. The Meaning of Waiting upon God.

1. It is a life of desire toward God. Our desire must be not only toward the good things that God gives, but toward God Himself, his favor and love, the manifestation of His name to us and the influences of His grace upon us.

2. It is a life of delight in God. Our delight in God must be such that we never wish for more than God. Believing Him to be the all-sufficient God we must be entirely satisfied in Him; let Him be mine and I have enough.

3. It is a life of dependence upon God. It is as the child who waits on his father, in whom he has confidence and on whom he casts his care. It is to expect all good to come to us from God.

4. It is a life of devotedness to God. To wait on God is entirely and unreservedly to refer ourselves to His wise and holy directions and disposals and cheerfully to acquiesce in them and comply with them.

B. The Time of Waiting upon God.

1. It is every day. We must wait on God every day; on the Lord's day and on weekdays; on idle days and on busy days; in days of prosperity and in days of adversity; in the day of youth and in the days of old age.

2. It is all the day. We must cast our daily cares upon God and manage our daily business for Him; receive our daily comforts from Him and resist our daily temptations and do our daily duties in His strength; and bear our daily afflictions with submission to His will.

III. PRACTICAL REMINDERS FOR WAITING UPON GOD.

A. The Duty of Waiting upon God.

1. In behalf of the family. When you meet with your families in the morning, wait upon God for a blessing upon them and render thanks for the mercies received. In the education of your children wait upon God to make their education successful.
