A Worthy,Tribute to a Godly Mother

Il. KEEP THE CHILDREN'S DUTY IN RELATION TO A GODLY MOTHER.

A. Grateful Remembrance.

1. Of physical care. The tender and earnest care which God placed in the hearts of our mothers when we were in the helpless state of innocency, the pains they took with us when we were unable to do anything for ourselves, for all of this we can never make sufficient return.

2. Of spiritual nurture. As godly mothers we ought to do honor to their names and their memory should be doubly precious to us, remembering that under God we "owe unto them our own souls." Blessed are they of the Lord who taught us the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and followed it with constant and earnest prayers.

B. Fervent Thanksgiving.

1. For God's grace in them. The grace which led them on in their way and bore them as "upon eagles' wings," until He had brought them safely and comfortably to their journey's end—to that blessed state where they receive the end of their faith and hope, even the completion of the salvation of their souls.

2. For our benefit by the grace in them. Although they could not give us grace, yet God was pleased to make use of them as instruments in His hand in the beginning and carrying on of that good work. God enabled them to be guides to us and faithful monitors.

C. Acknowledge the Goodness of Their Way.

1. They were honorable. We must reckon that they were truly honorable and place more value on the fact that we are all children of saints rather than the children of nobles. This will quicken us to pursue honor in the same way in which "they attained a good report." Let us then have the same honor that our godly mothers had.

2. They were happy. They were happy in the enjoyment of themselves and of what God had given them in this world; happy in the quiet and repose of their own minds; and happy in the prospect of better things in the better country. The ways of God and godliness are good ways.
