CLASSIC SERMON OUTLINES —. Matthew Henry
B. The Power of God in Relation to His Anger.
1. God is a consuming fire. If God is an almighty God we may thence infer, "Who can stand before His indignation?" (verse 6). See God here as "a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29), terrible and mighty. Here is His indignation against sin, His fury poured out, not like water, but like fire, like the fire and brimstone rained upon Sodom (Psalm 11:6).
2. Sinners are an unequal match for the wrath of God. "Who can abide in the fierceness of His anger?" (verse 6). As it is irresistible, so it is intolerable. Some of the effects of God's displeasure in this world a man may bear up under, but the fierceness of His anger, when it fastens immediately upon the soul, who can bear it?
1. He is not easily provoked.
2. He is ready to show mercy.
