SERMON THIRTY-TWO
THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM
By faith Abraham obeyed. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise; for he looked for a city whose builder and maker is God. By faith Abraham offered up Isaac: accounting that God was able to raise him from the dead.
—HEBREWS 11:8-10, 17-19
THE WRITER having, in the close of the Bseas chapter recommended the grace of faith and a life of faith as apostacy; he now enlarges upon this excellent grace. in fee this he writes more about the achievements of Abraham's faith than any of the other patriarchs.
I. THE GROUND OF ABRAHAM'S FAITH (Verse 8).
A. The Call of God.
1. The nature of the call. In Acts 7:2, Stephen relates the manner in which Abraham was called. This was an effectual call by which he was converted from the idolatry of his father's house. It was the call of God and therefore a sufficient ground for faith and rule of obedience.
2. The lessons from the call. (a) The grace of God is free in taking of the worst of men and making them the best. (b) God must come to us before 'we come to him. (c) In converting sinners God works a glorious work. (d)_ This call is to leave sin and sinful company.
