Despising the Soul

B. This Is Seen When We Consider the Nearness of the Soul.

1. It is man's possession. Our soul is our own, for we are entrusted with it as committed to our charge by God to be employed in His service now and fitted for a happiness hereafter.

2. It is the man himself. The soul is the man, and what is the man but a living soul? Abstract the soul as living and the body is a lump of clay; abstract the soul as rational and the man is as the beasts that perish.

C. This Is Seen When We Consider the Purchase of the Soul.

1. It was not purchased by silver and gold. As silver and gold would not satisfy the desires of a soul nor its capacities, so neither would they satisfy for the sins of the soul. We are "not redeemed with corruptible things."

2. It was purchased by the blood of Christ. Christ gave Himself, His own precious blood to be a ransom for our souls, a counterprice. He made His soul an offering for ours. Nothing less would buy them back out of the hands of Divine Justice—would save them from ruin and secure to them their blessedness.

D. This Is Seen When We Consider the Projects Concerning the Soul.

The Holy Spirit is striving with men's souls to sanctify and save them; the evil spirit goes about continually seeking to debauch and destroy them.

1. The projects of God. Think what projects the love of God has to save souls. He sent His Son to seek and save lost souls. He has given His Spirit to work upon our spirits and to witness to them. He has appointed ministers of the Gospel to "watch for your souls."

2. The projects of Satan. Think also what projects Satan has to ruin souls. What devices, what depths, what wiles he has in hunting for precious souls and how all the forces of the powers of darkness are kept continually in arms to war against the soul.

E. This Is Seen When We Consider the Perpetual Duration of the Soul.

1. The fact of its perpetual duration. The soul is an immortal spirit that will last and live forever. The spirit of a man is that candle of the Lord which will never be blown or burnt out.
