Classic Sermon Outlines
CLASSIC SERMON OUTLINES — Matthew Henry of the honor of the holiness and justice of God in the government of the world. Christ was delivered to death by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God (Acts 2:23). None but God had the power to lay our sins upon Christ because the sin was committed against Him and to Him the satisfaction was to be made and because Christ, His own Son, was sinless.
1. He was appointed to make satisfaction for sins.
2. He was appointed to save men from the penal consequences of sin.
B. The Transference of Our Sins upon Christ.
The way we are saved from the ruin of sin is by the laying of our sins on Christ as the sins of the Old Testament offerer were laid upon the sacrifice. Our sins were made to meet or fall upon Him. The laying of our sins upon Christ implies the taking of them off from us. We shall not fall under the curse of the law if we submit to the grace of the Gospel. They were laid upon Christ when He was made sin, a sin offering, for us and redeemed us from the curse of the law by being made a curse for us.
1. The fact of the transference of our sins upon Christ illustrated in the Old Testament.
2. The implication of the transference of our sins upon Christ.
C. The Extent of the Atonement.
It was the iniquity of us all that was laid on Christ; for in Him there is a sufficiency of merit for the salvation of all, which excludes none that do not exclude themselves. It intimates that this is the one only way of salvation. All that are justified are justified by having their sins laid on Jesus Christ and though they were ever so many, He is able to bear the weight of them all.
1. It is.sufficient for all.
2. It is efficient only to those who believe.
CONCLUSION
God laid upon Christ our iniquity; but did He consent to it? Yes, He did. Therefore, when He was seized He requested those into whose hands He surrendered Himself that His surrender should be His disciples' dis-
Christ the Suffering Substitute charge: "If ye seek me, let those go their way" (John 18:8). By His own voluntary will He made Himself responsible for our debt. Because He did the Father's will and made atonement for the sin of man, He rolled away the reproach of His death and stamped immortal honor upon His sufferings notwithstanding the disgrace and ignominy of them.
