Chapter XXVIII
The Fall of Satan
S. Why did he desert it?
T. When I say that he deserted it by willing what he was not supposed to will, I am showing clearly why and how he deserted it. For he deserted it because he willed what he was not supposed to will: and he deserted it in this way, i.e., by willing what he shouldn't have willed.
S. But why did he will what he was not supposed to will?
T. No cause preceded this willing except his mere ability to will.
S. Then he willed to desert justice because he was able to will?
T. No, because the good angel was also able to will, but he didn't will to desert justice. For no one wills what he is able to will simply because he is able to will; there must be still another cause—although, of course, he would never will anything at all if he were not able to will.
S. Why, then, did he wiU?
T. Only because he willed. For there was no other cause by which his will was in any way driven or drawn; but his will was both its own eflScient cause and its own eflFect—if such a thing can be said!
Chapter XXVIII That the ability to will what should not be willed is always a good, and that willing is itself always good to the degree that it is.
S. Well, if Satan's ability to will and actually willing are something, then they are good and they come from God.
T. Both are something. The ability to will is only something good and it is a free gift from God; and actually wilhng, in its essence, is something good. For even though Satan's will became evil by willing unjustly, nevertheless it is from God, from whom comes everything that is something. Now, not only does someone have from God that which God freely gives, but he also has what he unjustly steals with God's permission—for just as God is said to do whatever He permits to be done, so He is
Truth, Freedom, and EvU said to give whatever He permits to be stolen. Therefore, since
God permitted Satan to use that freely given ability for the purpose of robbery, Satan had the use of this ability from God.
This use is nothing other than his actually willing. For just as speaking is using the ability to speak, so willing is nothing other than using the abiUty to will.

CAL DIALOGUES
EDITED AND TRANSLATED BY
JASPER HOPKINS & HERBERT RICHARDSON
'The present volume originated in the recognition that there are not sufficient translations available to provide students in the history of philosophy and theology with an adequate knowledge of the methods and conclusions of medieval thought. The translation of Anselm's works is doubly justified as a means to fill this lacuna. For not only is he fully the equal of Augustine and Thomas in his speculative power, but he also employs a consciously pedagogical style which is adapted to the needs of the beginning student. Hence these treatises will continue to be in our day what Anselm intended them to be in his own: useful tools for theological and philosophical education
''[Anselm] refurbished the dialectic of the monastic schools by turning his intellectual powers to analyze the philosophical issuesimplicit in, and inextricably bound up with, the theology of the medieval church. Thus philosophy and theology are inseparable in his writings: he is both dialectician and exegete....The keenness of Anselm's thinking lies in his ability to develop an argument and follow it doggedly to its conclusion. The assumptions of his argument are sometimes theological and determined by Scripture; but this never interferes with his quest for consistency nor with the rigor of his argument. He is led into examining the notions of possibility and necessity, ability and inability, signification and reference.
'Tn De Veritate, De Libertate Arbitrii, and De Casu Diaboli, he combines appeals to three sources:
(1) ordinary use of language expressions, (2) a priori rationalistic judgments, and (3) experience in general. His scholasticism consists precisely in his intent to understand and defend the dogmas of faith in terms of the dialectics fostered by these three sources. Each of the dialogues here presented begins with a biblical or theological problem; but its development carries one into what, today at least, would be called distinctly philosophical ramifications."—jasper hopkins &
