Note on the Text
The translation of selections of the Summa is from the 1952 Marietti recension of the Leonine text. The translation of selections of the Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard is from the 1856–1857 Parma edition. The translation of selections of the work On Kingship is from the 1979 Leonine text. In citing books and passages in the Bible, we have followed the Revised Standard Version, but we have translated Aquinas’ biblical quotations as he phrases them, not as they appear in the Latin Vulgate. We have cited Plato according to the Stephanus divisions, and Aristotle according to the Bekker divisions. For patristic citations or quotations, we have referred the reader to the Migne edition.
