Week 10: The Wisdom Literature
Week 10: The Wisdom Literature
The Christian mind acknowledges God as the supreme and ultimate reality behind all phenomena. The God-centeredness of the Bible (its recognition of God as Creator, Sustainer, Lord, Savior, Father, and Judge) is basic to the Christian mind. The Christian mind is a godly mind. The biblical view is that goodness is primarily godliness, since the first and great commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our being.
This explains the meaning of true wisdom. Wisdom is a prominent theme in the Bible. In the Old Testament, in addition to the Law and the Prophets, there are the five books of wisdom, namely Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs. These wisdom books are all concerned with what we call “meaning.” What does it mean to be a human being? And how do suffering, evil, injustice, and love fit in with this meaning? This is our topic this week and next.
