Week 28: The Upper Room
Week 28: The Upper Room
Jesus had evidently made up his mind to spend his last evening in a private meal with his disciples, for he had made arrangements with a friend to lend him his guest room, which Jesus described as “a large upper room, furnished and ready” (Mark 14:15). According to the Synoptic evangelists, this was the Passover meal that followed the sacrificing of the Passover lambs, for Jesus spoke of his eagerness to eat the Passover with them (Luke 22:15). According to John, however, Jesus died on the cross a day earlier at the very time that the Passover lambs were being killed. Various attempts have been made to harmonize these two chronologies. The best seems to be to declare both correct, each having been observed by a different group—either the Pharisees and the Sadducees or the Galileans and the Judeans. We will have the privilege this week of watching Jesus wash his disciples’ feet and inaugurate the Lord’s Supper. We will also listen both to his teaching about the Holy Spirit and to his prayers for his disciples.
