Week 5: The Patriarchs
Week 5: The Patriarchs
After the terrible judgments of the flood and the tower of Babel, God planned a new beginning. Babel spelled a scattering of the people, but Abraham spelled their gathering under the promise of God. It was in his outstanding condescension that he called himself the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exod. 3:6; Mark 12:26). For all three patriarchs, together with Joseph of the next generation, were swayed by strong human emotions, a sorry mixture of good and evil, greatness and pettiness. Yet through them God was working out his purpose; they occupy a unique position in salvation history, that is, in God’s plan for the redemption of the world.
