Week 35: Preparing for Pentecost
Week 35: Preparing for Pentecost
We have looked into the Old Testament and followed the life of Israel. We have looked into the Gospels and followed the life of Christ. We come now to the third section of the Bible, namely the Acts, the Letters, and the Revelation, which will enable us to follow the life of the church.
Without the Acts, the New Testament would be seriously impoverished. For although we have four accounts of Jesus, we have only this one account of the early church. So the Acts occupies an indispensable place in the Bible. In it Luke tells us of the ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Spirit, of the ministries of Stephen and Philip, and of the dramatic conversions of Saul and Cornelius, after which Peter fades into the background and Luke’s hero Paul dominates the stage.
But the Acts does more than provide a narrative of these events. Its value is also in the inspiration that it brings us. Calvin was right to call it “a kind of vast treasure.”
