John’s Vision of the Lamb

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!

Revelation 5:13

In John’s vision the Lamb now took action. He came to the throne occupant and took the scroll from his right hand. This was the signal for the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders to fall prostrate before the Lamb and sing a new song, declaring his worthiness to take the scroll and open its seals, not now because of the creation, but because of the redemption.

Because you were slain,

and with your blood you purchased men for God

from every tribe and language and people and nation.

You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,

and they will reign on the earth.

verses 9–10

Next, millions of angels joined in, proclaiming the worthiness of the Lamb, because he had been slain, to receive seven blessings, since all power and wisdom must be ascribed to him. And finally, John heard every creature throughout the whole universe ascribing praise and honor “to him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb” (v. 13). The four living creatures endorsed it with their amen, and the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped.

It is a most magnificent vision of the whole creation on their faces before God and his Christ, and it is truly amazing that the Lamb is bracketed with the occupant of the throne as sharing it with him and receiving equal praise.

If it be asked why Jesus Christ alone is able to interpret history, we have to reply, “Because he was slain.” By the cross he has conquered evil, redeemed us for God, suffered as we do, and is a conspicuous example of power through weakness, the Lamb on the throne.
