Week 27: The Final Week
Week 27: The Final Week
For six weeks we have been reflecting on some of the main words and works of Jesus during his public ministry. We come now to his final week on earth, which is usually called Holy Week. It begins with Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and ends with his crucifixion (Good Friday). It is immediately noteworthy that the evangelists devote a disproportionate amount of space to Jesus’s final week—in Luke’s case a quarter of his Gospel, in the case of Matthew and Mark about a third, and in John’s Gospel as much as a half. This shows how important the Gospel writers regard the events surrounding Jesus’s death.
Sunday: The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
Monday: The Cleansing of the Temple
Tuesday: The Parable of the Tenants
Wednesday: The Error of the Sadducees
Thursday: The Little Apocalypse
Friday: The Anointing by Mary
