Week 47: The Letter to the Hebrews
Week 47: The Letter to the Hebrews
The Letter to the Hebrews is anonymous. Neither its author nor its readership is known, so debate about them continues. What is known, however, is the author’s purpose in writing. Owing partly to his readers’ persecutions and partly to their theological confusion, they were in danger of backsliding, even apostatizing. So the aim of the author of Hebrews is so to establish the finality of Jesus Christ—his priesthood, sacrifice, and covenant—that it would be inconceivable for his readers to fall away from the faith. The letter is a marvelous exposition of the person and work of Jesus Christ, his exalted person, and his finished work.
Whoever the author was, he was obviously well qualified to develop his theme, for he was extremely familiar with the Old Testament story and with the story of Jesus; he was able to demonstrate that all the Old Testament expectations had been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
